Suriname Elects a New President, Ending Bouterse’s Long Rule
    The New York Times
In July of this year, Suriname elected a new president and the former dictator Desi Bouterse was removed from office by their Congress. The new president, Chan Santokhi’s victory came after a long period of economic downturn in a divided nation that has struggled to contain the coronavirus. This event is newsworthy because of the impact and consequences it has. With the election of a new leader, Suriname has the chance to turn around their economy before it is too late and rebuild relationships with other countries that had been damaged by the former president. The opportunities that this election has created for Suriname makes the information in this article newsworthy.

Amazon under threat: Fires, loggers and now virus
    BBC News
94% of Suriname is home to a small portion of the Amazon Rainforest, making it a crucial factor when it comes to climate change and combating it. There are many elements that are contributing to climate change and the destruction of the Amazon, the newest being the coronavirus. Suriname has one of the best records in conservation of the Amazon compared to other countries that also house portions of the forest. However, over the past several years there has been an increase in forest destruction within Suriname and a big reason for this is gold mining, which accounts for 73% of deforestation there. A large portion of the Suriname economy relies on gold mining, but it is suspected that up to 60% of gold miners in this country are individuals that are there illegally from Brazil. This story is newsworthy because of its impact, consequences, and destruction. This country plays such a large role in the Amazon rainforest, which itself is crucial in determining the future of our climate, which makes this type of information newsworthy.

Why is this newsworthy: This article is newsworthy because of the novelty in the article. This article is saying how things will not go back to normal for multiple years and that the people of Sri lanka need to be prepared for it.

Migrants in Bosnia and Herzegovina stranded on railway tracks
Bosnia has people from Bosnia and Herzegovina that are trying to live there, but can’t find a place to settle. All of the camps are full and are not following covid guidelines. 600 refugees are arriving in Bosnia each week and disused railway tracks are the only place they can stay at the moment. This is considered newsworthy because Bosnia is not accepting refugees. They are stranded in between 2 neighboring Bosnian provinces.

Possible Loss of 50,000 Jobs in Bosnia and Herzegovina in Case of Lockdown
Citizens and businesses are fearing a new lockdown in Bosnia. They are expecting a “drastic downturn in the economy in the event of a new lockdown”. Covid has already messed up the economy worldwide. It will have an even bigger impact on smaller countries like Bosnia. Businesses that were promised money from the damage of Covid still haven’t been paid yet. This is a scary thing going on worldwide.

Headline 1:Singapore offers 'pandemic baby bonus' to boost births
    BBC News
Singapore is offering a one-off payment to encourage people to have babies during the coronavirus pandemic.
The worry is that citizens are putting off parenthood as they struggle with financial stress and job layoffs.
Details of the amount that could be paid have yet to be released. It is in addition to several hefty baby bonuses offered by the government.
Singapore has one of the lowest birth rates in the world, which it has struggled to boost for decades.
It is in stark contrast to some of its neighbours such as Indonesia and the Philippines, which are facing the prospect of a massive spike in pregnancies from their coronavirus lockdowns.

Singapore firm pushes ahead with Newcastle Utd bid
'My face was on a wanted poster'
"We have received feedback that Covid-19 has caused some aspiring parents to postpone their parenthood plans," Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said on Monday.
Mr Heng said more details about amounts and how they will be paid would be announced at a later date.
Singapore's current baby bonus system provides eligible parents up to S$10,000 ($7,330, £5,644) in benefits.
Singapore's fertility rate touched an eight-year low in 2018, according to government data, at a rate of 1.14 births per woman.
Many Asian countries face a similar issue of falling fertility rates, which could worsen during the pandemic downturn.
Earlier this year, China's birth rate fell to its lowest since the formation of the People's Republic of China 70 years ago. This came despite the easing of the much criticised one-child policy.

Headline 2:Coronavirus: Singapore schoolchildren must use Covid-tracing tech
    BBC News
Singapore pupils aged over seven must use the city state's contact-tracing app or wearable device from December.
Both use Bluetooth signals to log any contact with other users' devices.
Pupils do not always have access to their phones but free tokens that can be worn on a lanyard or carried are being given away at community centres.
It is part of a wider effort to enable conferences to restart and provide better tracing in higher-risk settings, such as busy hotels, cinemas and gyms.

Pupils will not be turned away from school if they forget or misplace the tokens.
And they are being asked to label them with their name as they are not water- or drop-proof so will need to be removed during some activities.
The government has already said the TraceTogether app or token will, however, be mandatory in workplaces, restaurants and shopping centres.
Advocates have also suggested the tokens could be better for privacy.
Users' data is stored on the token, purged regularly and sent to the Ministry of Health only after a positive coronavirus test.
Singapore's schools have been open since June, following a two-month closure.
And on Monday, the country recorded no local cases of Covid-19 and one imported case.
In the UK, all use of local contact-tracing apps is voluntary and there is no wearable alternative - although the idea has been explored.
And the National Education Union of teachers and support staff has said there has been a 50-fold increase in coronavirus infections in secondary schools since September.

First news story: Argentina and Brazil crops threatened by locust swarm (BBC)
Brazil and Argentina are monitoring the movements of a large swarm of locusts, which has been eating its way through crops in the region and Uruguay could be next.
This is newsworthy because it will effect their crops and food because they eat everything.

Second news story: A large bronze eagle with a swastika under its talons soon to be auctioned in Uruguay should go to a museum or educational institute, a US Holocaust research centre is urging.
This is newsworthy because it can fall into the hands of white supremacists, the Simon Wiesenthal Center warns.

ISIS Fighters Attack Outpost in Tajikistan
    The New York Times
Right outside of Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, 17 people were killed by members of the Islamic State. No one has taken responsibility for the attack yet. It is thought that the attackers were citizens of Tajikistan. Mr. Gochli emphasizes that these people are scared of the Taliban and that is why no flags were raised. These attackers had been in the district for a couple weeks right along Tajikistan’s border. This could all be a growth of Afghanistan’s affiliation of the Islamic States. This is newsworthy because of the impact and consequences it has on the Tajikistan people. People have lost their lives by these attackers. The spread of the Islamic State could also lead to more problems in the middle east in the near future.

‘The Fields Heal Everyone’: Post-Soviet Leaders’ Coronavirus Denial
    The New York Times
Leaders in Central Asia have been down playing the virus for a while and they haven’t stopped yet. Countries all around central asia have been getting the consequences for this including Tajikistan. Authorities brought a large group of a couple thousand people into a stadium and told them their health habits are why the pandemic is still going on. The president of Tajikistan began with closing the mosques but quickly re opened them on his own. He has been giving the citizens a message that he will “defy the virus” and will continue with the normal activities. This is newsworthy because of the impact and consequences of not taking the pandemic seriously. The virus kills many infected people and will continue to spread if precautions are not taken. If countries like Tajikistan continue to defy the virus, the consequences wont stop and we will be dealing with covid for a much longer period of time.

US approves $1.8bn weapons sale to Taiwan
    Reporter BBC
The US approved a $1.8 bn weapon sale to Taiwan to help them build combat capabilities and strengthen asymmetric warfare. The republic of China wants to take back the country of Taiwan and has talked about invading and taking it by force so the weapons are away to go against China if needed. Also the US giving them weapons and attending a meeting with Taiwan also made China threaten the US saying don’t send any wrong signals to Taiwan independence because it can result in severe damage to China US relations.
This is newsworthy because of the impact and consequences it has on the people's lives. This could cause many to worry about where they will go if a war happens between the two countries and depending on who wins how the new government rule will change their lives to. Also conflict makes this newsworthy because the disagreement of Taiwan not being a part of Republic of China brings attention to many and Taiwan getting military weapons and China threatening to invade with force is a huge event of Conflict.
Headline 2 Taiwan's redesigned passport shrinks words ‘Republic of China
    Reporter BBC
Taiwan changed their passport and took off the Republic of China and made the Taiwan name on it bigger to stop confusion between it’s nationals and citizens of China. Also China opposes any interactions with US and Taiwan and says not to send any wrong signals to Taiwan's independence to avoid damage with China-US relations. This is newsworthy because of the proximity between the two countries they both are hearing about the news and many will know about it and this can be seen as a big deal because Taiwan is trying to not be seen as Citizens of China. Also because of Novelty this was unexpected and not normal form the usual events of having Republic of China on the passport making this newsworthy.
