Friday-Wednesday, January 15-20 THE 5-PART Job INTERVIEW

Friday at midnight is the last day to turn in missing work!

The most important step to landing a job is

being prepared for your interviews. By doing

some preparation you'll feel more in control, and will

appear cool, calm and collected as a result to your

prospective employers – qualities always looked for in the

 perfect candidate.

Assignment: As a class, we will read over the steps in a 5

part interview. After reviewing the steps, please respond to

the following questions. Tailor your responses your own

choices.

Open up a google doc and share by Wednesday noon,

January 20 for full credit. Remember the grades for this

second quarter close at midnight on Friday, February 22.

1. Select a company or organization that you might like

to work for.  Here is a short selection below. You may use

one of these or any other you wish. These are the largest

employers in Monroe County.  Reseach the company's

history, number of employees, mission statement /

philosophy. Write a synopsis of what you discovered.

2. Find a picture (or take one for an additional 100 bonus

points of yourself), showing how you would dress for the

position for which you wish to apply. (Careful! You are not

heading to a party.)

3. Why must you make sure you have your phone is off, your

posture upright and no gum in your mouth during an

interview?

4. Answer the following typical inteview questions, as

if this were an authentic interview.

    a. Why do you want this job?

    b. Where would you like to be in your career five years

         from now?

    c.  Tell me about your strengths

    d. Tell me about a weakness you have and how you

        work with it.

    e. Have you any questions for me?

an interview. (By the way, with covid there have not been

the regular coffee shop meeting with former alumnus

of potential colleges, but this skill is important for

THE 5-PART JOB INTERVIEW

1. Before the Interview

• Do your homework. Find out as much as you can about the company/organization before the interview.

Do an internet search to find what services or products the company provides. Try to find the company’s culture and long-term goals. Talk with current employees to learn more about the company.

• Know where you are going. Make sure you know where the company is located.

• Arrive 5-15 minutes early. Do not arrive too early, but not late either.

• Be prepared for the interview. Bring extra copies of your resume, a pen, and questions for the interview.

Do not bring your phone or at the very least make sure the phone is on silent.

• Dress for success. As a general rule dress one or two steps above the position you are applying for.

2. The Start of the Interview (Beginning)

• Inform the secretary/receptionist that you have an interview, whom it is with and the time of the interview

• When meeting the interview, look them in their eyes, shake hands firmly, introduce yourself, smile and be confident. (With covid shaking hands may not be what you'll do, but you can make a nodding gesture with your greeting.)

• Keep the communication positive. Watch your posture. Let the interviewer lead the interviewer.

Remember to SMILE.

Don’t chew gum, curse, fidget, etc. Never mumble. Keep that eye contact!

3. The Interview (Middle)

• Stay positive and keep good posture and body language.

• Know your resume well and be prepared to answer questions.

• Express your willingness to learn.

• Be thorough with your answers. Be prepared to give examples.

• If you do not understand the question, ask the interviewer for further explanation.

• It is okay to take a moment to organize your thoughts before answering difficult questions. (Take a short pause,)

• You do not need to answer illegal questions, such as questions relating to your age, religion, race, ethnicity or marital status.

So what if someone asks you one of these?

• Don’t focus on your weaknesses or your negative attributes, criticize former employers, discuss personal issues, or salary/benefits unless initiated by the interviewer.

4. The Interview (End)

• Ask job-related questions you prepared for the interview.

• If offered the job immediately, be prepared to discuss salary, benefits, work hours. You do not need to give them an immediate answer.

• If you are told that you will be contacted, ask about how long it will be.

• Thank the interviewer for their time and reiterate your interest with the company/organization.

• Shake hands firmly on the way out. (Again, with covid, this might not be the situation.)

5. The Follow-up

• Send the interviewer(s) a thank you letter soon after the interview!!!!!! This is very important.

• Follow up with the company a week or two after the interview to see if  they have made a hiring decision. Remember to keep it professional.

Having interviewed with...(who) (when), I am calling to inquire about the status of my application.
